Metabolism – the speed with which the body burns calories, converting them into energy – among other things affects how easily you gain or lose weight. Although mainly genetics, age, sex and body structure influence metabolism, there are still ways to speed up the process somewhat.
Have a cup of coffee
Coffee, as well as other drinks with caffeine, as scientists have proven to positively affect metabolism, and also reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. But do not get carried away, as too much caffeine can cause nausea, insomnia and increase nervousness.
Eat something sharp
It is proved that capsaicin, the substance responsible for the pepper’s acuity, raises body temperature and accelerates fat burning. There is also scientific evidence to suggest that isothiocyanates contained in products such as mustard, horseradish, wasabi, accelerate metabolism and help in the splitting of visceral fat.
Get your omega-3’s
Omega-3s balance blood sugar and reduce inflammation, helping to regulate metabolism. They may also reduce resistance to the hormone leptin, which researchers have linked to how fast fat is burned.
Buy wholemeal products
On the “processing” of whole-grain foods the body spends more effort than on the assimilation of food from the processed grain. By including in the diet whole wheat bread, pasta, cereal mixtures, you can increase metabolism, forcing you to spend more energy.
Avoid stress
In a state of stress, the body begins to produce a hormone called cortisol, which worsens metabolism. Studies have been carried out showing that the body under stress with the same loads and nutrition burns an average of 100 calories per day. For a year, these calories can form in 4-5 extra pounds.
